NALSAR University of Law, through its criminal justice initiative The Square Circle Clinic, invites applications for the position of Consultant (Research) on a contractual basis. A total of one (01) vacancy is available at the New Delhi office.
This is a full-time role with an initial contract of one year, which may be extended annually based on performance and the University’s requirements. The selected candidate will play a key role in shaping and executing the research agenda of The Square Circle Clinic.
About The Square Circle Clinic
The Square Circle Clinic is a leading criminal justice program at NALSAR University of Law, with offices in New Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, and Hyderabad. The Clinic provides pro bono legal defence to death row prisoners and undertrial prisoners in Pune and Nagpur.
In addition to legal assistance, the Clinic conducts in-depth research and public engagement on critical issues such as forensics, the death penalty, criminalisation and punishment, science and technology in criminal justice, prevention of torture, legal aid, and mental health in the criminal justice system.
Previously functioning as Project 39A, the team transitioned to NALSAR University of Law in April 2025. Members of the Clinic are widely recognised for producing ground-breaking research in the field of criminal justice in India.
Key Responsibilities

Support and implement The Square Circle Clinic’s research strategy

Conduct data collection and field research for ongoing projects
-
Analyse research findings and contribute to academic and policy publications
-
Publish research articles in reputed peer-reviewed journals
-
Assist in preparing research briefs, reports, and white papers
-
Write shorter articles for mainstream media and digital platforms
-
Develop and maintain collaborations with central and state criminal justice agencies
-
Represent the Clinic at national and international forums
-
Contribute to the Clinic’s overall institutional growth and strategy
-
Handle administrative and strategic tasks required to meet organisational goals
Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate degree in Law (LLB) is mandatory
-
Knowledge of criminal law and the Indian criminal justice system is preferred
-
Minimum two years of relevant work experience is desirable
-
Proficiency in English and at least one Indian language is preferred
Salary / Compensation
The monthly remuneration will be based on experience and will range between
₹65,000 to ₹80,000 per month.

Selection Process
